Chinese New Year Celebration in Korat
While certainly not as pronounced as Yaowarat's festival(s), here in Korat we had a walking street that was set up along Chumphon Road. There were tons of food stalls offering delicious eats and drinks. There were also two, if not three, stages with live music performances going on. We went on a Thursday night, which was the third and final evening of celebration. Behind us in the above photo is the Chumphon Gate, or Pradu Chumphon as you would hear it in Thai. Immediately beyond the gate is the statue of Khun Ying Mo, or Ya Mo, who is highly revered throughout Korat for playing a key role in its defense - aiding in the rescue of numerous captives from invading Lao forces (1820s).
Following the walking street festivities, we went out for a great dinner with friends. One of the things that always amazes about Korat (besides the food) is the immense history of this city. One second I was looking at my Beer Chang and all of the food spread across the table, and the next, I peer over my shoulder and see an old section of the city wall - some 550 years old according to a friend.
